Assess Reading Strategies with a Simple Rubric

If your students record their thinking about the text they are reading in a reader’s notebook, you may find it easier to use a rubric to assess their understanding of reading strategies.  I would copy the rubric and highlight the parts of the rubric the student demonstrates, write a note (written feedback), and tape it into their notebook.  You can also adjust it to make a four point rubric.  This feedback is valuable to the student and provides great documentation for report cards! Reading Strategies Rubric
  • Includes:  Sentence Prompt, Student´s Name, Strategy
  • Thought logically completes the prompt
  • Relevant to specific text
  • Thought demonstrates understanding of the story

How do you assess reading strategies?
