Author Talk & Read Aloud: FAQ

1. What time and day are author talks?

All Author Talks are held monthly on a Friday at 11:00 AM Central Standard Time (Chicago).

2. I can’t attend the live event. Will it be recorded for later viewing?

Absolutely! We’ll be streaming the event live on Facebook, and you can find the recorded version afterward on both our Facebook page and YouTube channel.

3. How long will the event last? What if I can’t stay the entire time?

Our Author Talks typically run for about 30 minutes. If you need to leave early, no worries! The event will be recorded, so you can catch up on anything you miss later.

4. Who can join these talks? What age group are they for?

Everyone is welcome! These events are family-friendly and designed primarily for Spanish-speaking classrooms. However, individuals and families often join as well. Some books may be better suited for specific age groups, so we recommend checking the details for each talk.

5. How many people usually attend these events?

Attendance is growing! Just a few months ago, we had around 50 participants, and our most recent talk in March drew over 600 attendees.

6. What’s the best way to participate if my classroom is virtual?

We’ve seen two approaches work well:

  • Sharing the Zoom link directly with students, letting them join from their own devices.
  • Screen sharing: Teachers access the event on their own device and share the screen with students via their classroom Zoom session.

Both options are fine, but to protect privacy, we ask that all cameras remain off during the event since it will be recorded.

7. Can I invite other teachers or classes to join?

Yes, please do! Our goal is to make it easy for teachers to introduce their students to high-quality books, with no lesson planning required. Feel free to share the event with anyone who might be interested.

8. Should my class read the book before the talk?

That’s up to you! The author will give an introduction, read the book (or part of it), and answer questions. If you have the book, a quick "book walk" before the event—exploring the title, illustrations, and making predictions—can add value. You might also discuss the author’s background and where they are from.

9. Should students prepare questions for the author?

Definitely! While authors will answer questions about the book, encourage your students to think beyond it. They can ask about the author's inspiration, writing process, or even their favorite books. Questions in Spanish are encouraged since the authors feel most comfortable speaking in their native language.

10. How do you choose the authors?

We pick authors that we admire, focusing on those who have written high-quality, authentic Spanish children’s literature. We believe these voices are important and exciting to share!

11. Will there be more Author Talks?

Yes! We host these Author Talks once a month during the school year. Stay tuned for more!

12. Do I need to speak Spanish to join?

Not necessarily. While the event will be in Spanish, the authors will be reading picture books with expressive storytelling and visual support, making the event accessible for both fluent Spanish speakers and those still learning the language.
