Parvana, de once años, vive con su familia en una habitación de un edificio de apartamentos bombardeado en Kabul, la capital de Afganistán. El padre de Parvana, profesor de historia hasta que su escuela fue bombardeada y su salud destruida, trabaja desde una manta en el mercado, leyendo cartas para personas que no saben leer ni escribir. Un día, lo arrestan por el delito de tener una educación extranjera, y la familia se queda sin alguien que pueda ganar dinero o incluso comprar comida. English Description:

Eleven-year-old Parvana lives with her family in a room in a bombed-out apartment building in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. Parvana's father, a history teacher until his school was bombed and his health destroyed, works from a blanket in the market, reading letters for people who cannot read or write. One day, he is arrested for the crime of having a foreign education, and the family is left without someone who can earn money or even buy food. As conditions for the family grow desperate, only one solution emerges. Forbidden to earn money as a girl, Parvana must transform into a boy and become the breadwinner of the family.
