Books del Sur has curated and created lesson plans to support Read Alouds in grades Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. Each grade level collection contains over 100 titles divided into 25 different text sets.
Each set contains two to eight titles centered around a theme, genre, or author/illustrator study.
The guides were created by a group of bilingual teachers from across the United States. They are continuing to work on the lessons and update them as we speak.
The lesson plan is based on the three pillars of biliteracy – bilingualism and biliteracy; high academic achievement, and socio-cultural competence. The third pillar we see is the most important, yet the most difficult. Before composing the lessons, we discussed our identity, our bias, and our students’ identities. This was important for us to consider because cultural awareness starts with our self, our families, and finally social groups. Spanish books represent global society and culture. As educators it is our work to bridge the gap between our culture, our students’ culture, and the culture presented in a book. Through conversation and observation, we will support understanding of each other and others, which is the foundation of sociocultural competence.
