This literary debut tells the deep and moving story of how a girl and her grandmother face various manifestations of racism in their daily lives. Time at home with Abuelita is fun. It includes eating pancakes, jumping puddles, and painting their nails. Shopping trips are not always fun. In the supermarket and on the bus, people are impatient and suspicious. Sometimes they raise their voices and shout. This saddens, angers and frightens the girl protagonist of the story. She decides never to leave her house again. This changes when in an instant the little girl realizes that together, she and Abuelita are much stronger. Rafael Mayani's warm and expressive drawings magnificently illustrate the tenderness that exists between the narrator and her beloved Abuelita.
