Airman

Airman is set in the 1890s on the fictional Saltee Islands off Ireland's coast, where fourteen-year-old Conor Broekhart — who was literally born in a hot air balloon and has dreamed of flight his whole life — witnesses the assassination of the king by the villainous Marshal Bonvilain, is framed for the murder, and is thrown into a brutal island prison. There, forced to mine diamonds under inhumane conditions, Conor dedicates himself to a seemingly impossible goal: designing a flying machine that will allow him to escape, clear his name, and return to the life and the princess he loves. Eoin Colfer's sweeping adventure novel, reminiscent of The Count of Monte Cristo, is an excellent choice for older students because it combines gripping historical action with genuine themes of injustice, identity, and the power of a dream.
