English Description:

In this absorbing and exciting young adult novel, twelve-year-old Jaime sets out on the dangerous and treacherous journey that transforms his life from his home in Guatemala to the United States to live with his older brother. Jaime is sitting on his bed drawing when he hears a scream. He knows immediately that his first cousin and best friend, Miguel, is dead. Everyone in the small town in Guatemala where Jaime lives knows someone who has been killed by the Alfas, a powerful gang that is known for its violence and drug trafficking. Those who refuse to work for them are attacked or killed like Miguel. Jaime and his cousin Angela, Miguel's sister, fear that they are going to be next. There is only one way for them to escape. They must flee their home in Guatemala to go live with Jaime's older brother in New Mexico.
